The California Innocence Project stands with George Floyd and all victims of police brutality and police misconduct. Police misconduct is one of the leading causes of wrongful convictions and often directly leads to our innocent clients spending decades in prison for crimes they did not commit. There is also a disproportionate amount of police brutality and misconduct in cases involving people of color.
We join social justice organizations across the country calling for reform of police practices, better training, independent review of police conduct, and accountability for misconduct and brutality. We support all efforts to eradicate racism from our society and specifically remove racist actors from our criminal justice system.
We will continue in our fight to free the innocent, train excellent justice-driven lawyers, and reform policies and practices to decrease the number of wrongful convictions and assist those who have been wrongfully convicted.
